JAL decides to join oneworld, keeping benefits from the bilateral tie-ups

JAL announced on October 25 this year thatit has decided to join oneworld alliance. Although it is likely to take JAL about a year to join the alliance officially, JAL expectsto start possible membership services even before it becomes an official member. JAL is expected to be a leading member airline in Asia particularly, following American Airlines in North America or British Airways in Europe. Other oneworld members are Aer Lingus, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Iberia, LAN and Qantas.

ANA ties up with Japan Post to launch a new cargo airline

ANA and Japan Post jointly announced on October 20 that the pair has agreed a strategic tie-up for international air cargo services in accordance with the privatization of Japan Post. As one of the strategies, both companies will first launch a new cargo airline after April next year to develop internationalexpress distribution services targeting the Asian market particularly.

SKY intends to outgrow from odds and ends to real LCC

Skymark Airlines (SKY) President Shinichi Nishikubo declared at a news conference on October 12 that the airline will be reborn from next spring, changing its business strategy to a real low cost carrier (LCC) offering thorough low airfares. Under the new strategy, SKY will focus its business on major profitable routes and at the same time stop in-flight services to becomethe same LCC as in America or Europe.

*JAL Group changesthe corporate structure for more effective business

JAL Group announced on October 5 that it will merge JAL Domestic, operating company for the domestic flight business, into JAL International on October 1 2006 as one of the corporate structure reforms. Japan Airlines Corporation will be retained as the Group holding company. Also, JAL Sales, the group travel products sales company, will be merged into JAL International to transfer its air ticket sales business to JAL International on April 1 2006.
