Feature story: How can airlines survive the current crisis?
*The war forces JAL to reduce international flights
In response to the recent reduction of international flight demands after the Iraq war broke out, Japan Airlines (JAL) Group announced change of its
international flight plan particularly for the European routes. The actual damage has come to the surface as JAL suffers more than 30% down for April reservations for Kansai International-Paris flights over the same period last year.
To cope with the aggravating situation, JAL has decided to cancel four weekly Kansai International-Paris flights from April1 to 23 and three weekly code-sharing flights for the same route with Air France from March 30 to April 23. Accordingly, the route will independently operated by Air France for the period. In addition, JAL will reduce Narita-London flights from currently 12 weekly flights to seven weekly flights from April 1 to 23.
According to JAL, the number of reservations for international flights has dropped by 5% to 10% for March and by 10% to 20% for April on the whole, compared to the respective same months last year.
For other international flights, JAL will reduce Narita-Honolulu flights from currently 21 weekly flights to 14 weekly flights from April 1 to 24 and from 28 weekly flights to 21 weekly flights after April 25. Other reductions are as follows: Kansai International-Honolulu flights from 14 weekly flights to 7 weekly flights from April 1 to 23, Narita-Hong Kong flights from 28 weekly flights to 21 weekly flights from April 1 to 23, Narita-Guam flights from 14 weekly flights to 7 weekly flights from April 7 to 23.
At the same time, the airline will integrate 7 Kansai International-Guam weekly flights and 7 Kansai International-Saipan weekly flights into 7 Kansai-International-Guam-Saipan weekly flights.
Following the cancellation of three Narita-Istanbul-Kansai International-Narita weekly flights by Turkish Airlines from March 30 to April 30, JAL will stop the code-sharing operations for the flights with the airline.
The revision does not include any flights for the U.S. mainland. About that, JAL says that it has been reducing supplies for the U.S. routes as it has cancelled Narita-Dallas flights and Kansai International-Chicago flights since the 9.11 terrorist attacks.
